Policies
The fine print, in plain English.
How we handle your data, the rules for using Hire a Photographer, the cookies we set, and — importantly — what our platform is and is not.
Privacy policy
Last updated: 10 September 2026. This policy explains how Hire a Photographer ("we", "us") collects and uses personal data when you use hireaphotographer.co.uk. We act as a data controller for this information and handle it in line with the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
What we collect
- Account details — name, email address and password when you create an account.
- Photographer profiles — business name, description, contact details, prices, portfolio images, social links, calendar links and availability you choose to publish.
- Enquiries — your name, email address and message when you contact a photographer.
- Payment data — handled by Stripe. We never see or store your full card details; we receive subscription status records so we can manage your membership.
- Usage data — anonymous profile view counts and standard technical logs such as IP address and browser type.
How we use your data
- To operate the directory, show profiles and deliver enquiries to photographers (performance of a contract).
- To manage memberships, subscriptions and billing through Stripe (performance of a contract).
- To send transactional emails such as enquiry confirmations (performance of a contract) and service updates (legitimate interests).
- To improve the site and understand which profiles are being viewed (legitimate interests).
Sharing your data
We share data only with the providers needed to run the service: Supabase (hosting, database and authentication), Stripe (payments), Resend (email delivery) and our hosting provider. When you send an enquiry, your name, email address and message are shared with the photographer you contacted — please only include information you are happy for them to see. We never sell your data.
How long we keep data
Account and profile data is kept while your account is active and deleted when you close it (aside from copies retained for legal, tax or dispute purposes). Enquiry records are kept for up to 24 months. Billing records are kept for the period required by tax law.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of your data, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to its use, or ask us to port it. If we email you, you can opt out of non-essential emails at any time. To exercise any right, contact hello@hireaphotographer.co.uk. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Terms of use
Last updated: 10 September 2026. These terms govern your use of hireaphotographer.co.uk. By using the site you agree to them.
Using the site
You may browse the directory, view photographer profiles and send enquiries free of charge. You agree to use the site lawfully and respectfully, not to scrape, copy or resell its content, not to send spam or unsolicited commercial messages through the enquiry system, and not to interfere with the site's operation.
Accounts
You must provide accurate information when creating an account and keep your credentials secure. Accounts for photographers are personal to your business and must not be transferred or used to list photographers who have not agreed to appear.
Photographer memberships
- Membership costs £9.99 per month and begins with a three-month free trial, as shown on the pricing page at the time you subscribe.
- Memberships renew monthly until cancelled, which you can do at any time through your billing settings.
- Profiles may only be published with an active or trialing subscription. If a subscription is cancelled or ends, the profile is automatically unpublished.
- You are responsible for the accuracy of everything on your profile — your work, prices, availability and contact details. Only upload images you own or have permission to use.
- We may remove content or suspend profiles that breach these terms, are unlawful, misleading or harm the reputation of the directory.
Content and intellectual property
Photographers keep ownership of their images. By publishing a profile you grant us a licence to display that content on the site and in our promotional material about the directory. The Hire a Photographer name, logo and site design remain ours.
Liability
The site is provided "as is". We do our best to keep things running, but we cannot guarantee uninterrupted availability, and we are not liable for losses arising from enquiries, bookings or agreements made between the public and photographers. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded under UK law.
Changes and governing law
We may update these terms; significant changes will be announced on the site. These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. Questions? Email hello@hireaphotographer.co.uk.
Disclaimer
Hire a Photographer is a directory and discovery platform.
Our role is to provide a platform where photographers can showcase their services and where members of the public can discover and contact photographers. We are not a photography agency, booking agent, employer or representative of any photographer listed on the website.
What this means in practice
- Photographers listed on the site are independent businesses. They are solely responsible for their own work, prices, availability, conduct and compliance with the law.
- Any enquiry, booking, contract or payment you make is directly between you and the photographer. We are not a party to that agreement and receive no commission from bookings.
- We do not supervise, employ or control photographers, and we do not guarantee the quality, suitability, accuracy or legality of any services advertised on a profile.
- While we take steps to maintain a trusted directory — including profile review and verified memberships — listing on the site is not an endorsement, guarantee or certification of any photographer's work.
- Portfolio images, prices, reviews and availability are supplied by photographers and may change without notice.
If something goes wrong
If you have a dispute with a photographer, that dispute is with them directly. We're always happy to help where we reasonably can — for example by reviewing a profile that misrepresents a business — and you can reach us at hello@hireaphotographer.co.uk. Nothing in this disclaimer limits our responsibility for the platform itself or for your data, as set out in the sections above.
